God Speaks to Us:
An encounter with the Holy Spirit is an encounter with God. God clearly spoke to His people in Acts. He clearly speaks to us today. From Acts to the present, God has been speaking to His people by the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit takes up residence in the life of a believer. "God's Spirit lives in you' (1 Cor. 3:16) "Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God" (1 Cor. 6:19) Because He is always present in a believer, He can speak to you clearly and at any time.
- In the Old Testament God spoke in many different ways.
- In the Gospels God spoke through His Son.
- In Acts and to the present He speaks by the Holy Spirit.
- God speaks by the Holy Spirit through the Bible, prayer, circumstances, and the church to reveal Himself, His purposes and His ways.
- Knowing God's voice comes from intimate love relationship with God.
- God speaks when He has a purpose in mind for your life.
- The moment God speaks to you is the very moment He wants you to respond.
- The moment God speaks to you is God's timing.
(from "Experiencing God" by Henry Blackaby & Claude King)
I have been thinking of prayer -- particularly of praying for the Holy Spirit and its descent. It seems to me I have always limited God in this request. I have never felt that I might rationally ask or the whole influence of the Spirit to come down; not only on individuals but on a whole people, region, country and world. On Saturday I set myself to do this and the devil was very angry with me yesterday for it. I am now convinced it is my duty and privilege and the duty of every other Christian to pray for as much of the Holy Spirit as came down on the day of Pentecost, and a great deal more. I know not why we may ask for the entire and utmost influence of the Spirit to come down, and asking in faith see the full answer. -- Daniel Nash
"Father, we confess that we want to see change in our lives and in our church so we can bring about change in our city."
"Give us such a heart and passion after You that we may begin to see Your glory flow out of us to convict and save the lost. Release Your presence through us as You did through Charles Finney when he walked through factories and saw workers drop to their knees under Your glory and cried out for forgiveness although not one word had been spoken or preached. May the faintest shadow of Your presence in our lives heal the sick and restore the lame we meet in the streets."
"Father, we thank You for Your presence. Lord, the air is just pregnant with possibility and we sense Your nearness. But we must say that You are not near enough. Come, Holy Spirit. If not now, when? If not to us, who? And if not here, where? Just tell us, Lord, and we'll go; we will pursue Your presence because we want You, Lord. Your presence is what we are after and nothing less will do."
"Let Your presence so saturate us that unsaved guests can't step into our homes or be around us with unrepentant hearts. May Your glory bring conviction in their lives that leads to salvation -- not because of the words we say, but because of Your presence and power in our hearts." -- Prayer by Tommy Tenny from "The God Chasers"
"Many Christians look for shortcuts to the power of God. To try shortcuts is to become, at best frustrated; at worst, a false teacher or prophet. Listen very carefully; there is tremendous power for us in God; but not without holiness. Holiness precedes power." -- Francis Fragipane
